Multimedia performance lecture with audio and video.
The Voice in Exile responds to Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s video Mouth to Mouth with an act of translation-as-ventriloquism. I make visible and audible the ghosted voices in Cha’s previous untranslated bilingual Korean and English work by animating her minimalist writing and gestures through my body. This embodied research was developed into a chapter of my PhD thesis The Art of Being Spoken Through: Ventriloquism as Feminism after Conceptualism.
